How to Wash and Care for Baby Muslin Blankets

Quick answer

Wash your baby muslin blanket in cool or warm water on a gentle cycle with a mild, fragrance-free detergent. Tumble dry on low heat or air dry, and avoid fabric softener to keep the fabric soft and breathable.

Step-by-step care routine

1. Pre-treat stains: Spot-clean any stains with a drop of mild detergent and lukewarm water. Gently rub the fabric together, then rinse. Avoid scrubbing hard, which can stretch the weave. Check for stains before washing; dried stains are harder to remove.
2. Wash on gentle cycle: Place the blanket in a mesh laundry bag (optional but helpful). Use cold or warm water on the gentle/delicate cycle. Add only a small amount of mild, baby-safe detergent. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Too much detergent leaves residue; skip softener to maintain absorbency.
3. Dry with low heat or air dry: Tumble dry on low heat or hang the blanket to air dry. Remove from the dryer while slightly damp to reduce wrinkles. Avoid high heat, which can shrink or stiffen the fabric. Over-drying on high heat can damage the fibers and reduce softness.
